Tall Painted Porcelain Flat Vase with Blue and Black Vines by Alison Owen

This tall painted flat vase by Alison Owen is made through Owen's skillful hand-building technique, utilizing thin slabs of a porcelain paper clay. It is hand painted on the outside with blue and black glaze, underglaze and oil stick, with a clear glaze on the inside. The vessel features a sculptural vine motif. The shape and construction of the piece echoes ancient ceramic forms. The surface of the vase has a canvas texture, which adds depth to the piece.

The piece works as a decorative object or as a functional vase, and measures 20.88 in. x W 13 in. x D 3.5 in.

This piece is included in Owen's solo exhibition "Daily Vase" currently on view at Greenpoint Hill.

Owen creates simple, elegant pieces that allow the nature of the material of the piece to come through. She is inspired by the domestic interiors of Morandi and Bonnard's paintings, ancient Egyptian vessels, and the architectural diversity of her Brooklyn neighborhood. All of these influences come together to create works that are subtly patterned, slightly off-kilter, and satisfying to hold, display, and use.
